The Pedagogy Study Group of the American Musicological Society and Beyond Tokenism invite proposals for the 2022 Teaching Music History Conference. The conference will take place on June 9-11 on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and will be available virtually for those who cannot attend in person. Presentations may be made in-person or virtually (in real-time). The conference includes a special session hosted by Beyond Tokenism with its own call for proposals (see below). Proposers should indicate whether they wish to be considered for Beyond Tokenism, or TMHC. Proposers may submit one proposal to each call. If both are accepted, the program committee may ask you to choose only one for presentation.
Proposals must be submitted by 15 February 2022 at 11:59 PST using the online submission form.
Please find below two calls for proposals:
Pedagogy Study Group of the American Musicological Society

- Diversity, equity, and inclusion in music history courses and curricula
- Online pedagogy, student engagement, and new formats beyond the traditional classroom
- The effectiveness of specific teaching techniques or instructional modalities
- Pedagogy or curricular development that explores connections between music history and ethnomusicology, sound studies, music theory, etc.
- Perspectives on teaching and learning from disciplines beyond musicology
- Positioning music history within the curriculum
- Strategizing conversations about curriculum with colleagues and administration
- Perspectives on teaching and learning from outside the United States
Proposed presentation formats may include:
- Traditional papers (20 minutes) and teaching demonstrations (20 minutes) [250-word proposal]
- Lightning talks (5-7 minutes) [150-word proposal]
- Panel discussions (30-60 minutes) and creative sessions/workshops (30-60 minutes) [500-word proposal]. The Pedagogy Study Group encourages panel organizers to bring together panelists with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
Beyond Tokenism
Beyond Tokenism welcomes 250-word proposals for “teach-ins” (teaching demonstrations) that rethink the purpose of teaching music history, highlight alternative historical narratives, and/or improve equitable instructional design. “Teach-ins” can be on any topic you might teach in the music history classroom. At the conference, accepted presenters will:
- Do a 12-minute “teach-in” that demonstrates how you are rethinking and improving music history teaching
- Participate in a seminar with other presenters about what they were trying to accomplish with their “teach-in”
After the conference, Beyond Tokenism (https://musichistoryredo.wordpress.com/) hopes to publish your lesson plan as well as an essay of no more than 1,500 words that outlines your goals, strategies and reflections.
Proposals should discuss how your “teach-in” improves upon common music history pedagogy practices, how your approach is built upon existing research and practical experience, and what you plan to do during your teach-in.
